Ports can be the cause if your browser list isn't loading/ friends system not working, or if youcan't find servers...
If this happens to you.....this can be one of the solutions.... OPEN YOUR FUCKING PORTS YOU STUPID FAG. (you can do this as explained in the manual of your modem/router or by allowing it in your software firewall. Also, http://www.portforward.com)

Turning off firewall != opening router ports

If your router is blocking a network stream, it doesn't even make it to your firewall
